Machine Operator Job Description
Machine Operators perform a variety of duties and tasks using different types of machines. In general the duties may include:
- Setting up
- Operating and monitoring
- Troubleshooting and performing preventative maintenance
- Checking finished products for non-conformities
Equally important is keeping areas clean of debris to maintain a safe work environment. Additionally, machine operators may operate one or more machines at any given time. Some common types of machines include:
- CNC Machines
- Lathes
- Plastic Injection Molding Machines
- Drilling Machines
- Laser Machines
How To Become A Machine Operator?
Many warehouses and production facilities have entry-level machine operator positions where they can train you how to safely operate the equipment. Most machine operator positions require a high school diploma or GED certificate.
Under direct supervision, you’ll be tasked with learning the controls, proper procedures, safety protocols, and routine tasks. Once you gain more experience, you will begin working with moderate supervision and may begin overseeing multiple machines working at the same time, learning to program some machines, and perform routine maintenance tasks.
As you gain more experience, you may grow to find that you have exceptional aptitude working with machinery and you may grow into other roles such as Industrial Maintenance Mechanic or Machinist based on your other skills.
